How to Clean Inside Car Windows

If you’ve noticed that the road is starting to get blurred and it’s not because you need new glasses, dirty car windows could be the culprit. Luckily, cleaning car glass is a relatively simple, if time consuming endeavor. Here’s what to do, whether you’re wanting to learn how to clean a car windshield or interior front and rear windows:

• First, you’ll want to wipe down the glass with a microfiber cleaning cloth. That will remove any surface dust or dirt that’s on the windshield or windows.
• Move to a shady spot. Sun and hot glass are enemies of a streak-free shine!
• Spray glass cleaner inside the windshield. Then, quickly work it into the window, being sure to rub in one direction (i.e. side to side) in overlapping directions, and then the other (i.e. up and down) when wiping it off.
• Using the same method as above, apply rubbing alcohol to a clean microfiber cloth and wipe down the inside of the window. Then use a clean dry cloth to buff the window to a shine. 
• Another round of glass cleaner or even a dedicated glass polish applied at the end can help give the window even better luster.

Can You Use Windex on Car Windows?

Many people want to know if you can use Windex brand glass cleaner on car windows. While some have cautioned against using Windex or other ammonia-based cleaners with tinted windows, there’s not really much evidence that Windex with ammonia causes issues. That said, if you do have non-OEM tinted windows, you may be wise to use a non-ammonia based glass cleaner just to be safe. Do note, however, that Windex and other ammonia cleaners should not be used on interior surfaces like leather or plastic, as they can dry them out and cause damage down the line.

More Car Windshield Cleaning Tips

Are you noticing spots inside your windows even after cleaning? This is a more common occurrence on the exterior of windows due to mineral deposits in rainwater, bird droppings, and other contaminants that etch into the glass or leave a residue. Still, spots from things like spills or even paper towel pills can be eliminated with some of these tips:

• A microfiber cleaning cloth or terry cloth often eliminates the small paper fibers you get when cleaning windows with paper towels. They’re also less likely to leave streaks. Sometimes, the absorbency and rougher texture of a terry cloth towel are needed to cut through and polish streaks, whereas microfiber may simply spread around the liquid until the sun or heat dries it into droplets, causing the window to appear dirty (think of what happens when a mop is used on a floor vs. a dry towel). 
• To reach the corners of the windshield, use a reach-and-clean tool. These can be especially helpful when first learning how to clean car windshields on the inside as they offer additional leverage. 
• Use a circular motion when wiping with a microfiber cleaning cloth or wipe straight in one direction, but then wipe vertically at the end to remove streaks.
• This cleaning process can be used with all interior windows, not just the windshield.
